History
In the year 1857, after the Sepoy Mutiny, nationalism was germinating and steadily proliferating in India. Three Universities were developed in Calcutta (now Kolkata) , Madras( Chennai) and Bomaby ( now Mumbai) . At that historical juncture, Chakraberia School was established in the eastern part of Bhawanipur in South Calcutta on Saturday, February 28.
Udaychand Mitra and Girish Chandra Mitra had established Chakraberia Shishu Vidyalaya at the old residence of Nilmani Mitra with a vision of disseminating the effulgence of education to children at the primary level. During that period, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee was admitted to Chakraberia Shishu Vidyalaya. Having a brilliant student like Ashutosh Mukherjee was an impetus for the school, which started expanding. Initially, students were taught up to class VIII. Many of those students grew up to be successful professionals in different fields.
Later, the family of sir Ashutosh and Sir Ramesh Chandra Mitra, chief justice of India, played an active role in purchasing land to establish a new building for the school at 93, Bakul Bagan Road. In the next 100 years, the school grew in stature and an annexe building was established in 1989-90. Now, Chakraberia High School is a higher secondary school which offers courses in Commerce and Science streams.
