History

Kumudini Homes Higher Secondary School is one of the leading educational institutions in Kalimpong today. It is desirable that the students be acquainted with the past of the school, hence here is a very brief history. Initially, the school was known as “The Town Night School” and it was started in the year 1934 at 10th Mile, behind Pranami Mandir by some local enthusiasts highly interested in imparting education to those who were not able to attend school by day for some reasons or other. The very next year in 1935 itself, the school got recognition from the concerned authority as “The Town Middle English School” and it started running the day classes for the day scholars as well. After traversing a journey of 13 years in 1947 the school had upgraded upto class VIII. By then the roll strength had increased by leaps and bounds. The double storey wooden and bamboo structure did not have enough carpet area to run new classes. But the existing highest class had to be upgraded to the next higher class. Hence, in the subsequent year in 1948 this need made the school authorities to shift the school to some place more spacious than the present one. And the year 1948 witnessed the classes from VI to IX being run in the present premises where today stands Kumudini Homes Higher Secondary School. The old name has been replaced with ‘Kumudini’ which is actually the name of the beloved mother of the donor, Late Shri R.P. Saha- a great humanitarian and an acquaintance of the patron of the school Late Shri N.B. Gurung- who donated his residence, two wooden houses along with eight acres of land for the use of the school.

Kumudini Homes conducts classes from ‘Infant’ in Primary section to class XII in the Higher Secondary section which has Science, Humanities and Commerce stream, to offer the students. The medium of instruction is English in our school. The school has started smart classes in its large computer lab with a view to impart modern method of education. The school library has enough reference materials for easy understanding of the subjects. It is mention-worthy that the Kumudini Homes employees Co-operative Credit Society has started an infirmary to take care of the sick and injured students. For this purpose, a nurse has been appointed. The KHECCS has also been providing purified water to the students since 2017.

The aim of the school is to impart holistic education by cultivating in pupils habits of virtue, self-reliance, discipline and character formation by means of moral instructions. Special care is taken to see that each student grows academically, morally, spiritually, aesthetically as well as physically.

Over the years many students who have walked the corridors of the School have found themselves in high places both in the army and civil departments. Kumudini Homes celebrated its glorious and fruitful existence of 75 years in 2009 and now moving towards its centenary year in 2034.
