Some villagers, united by their common need for a high school in the locality, held rounds of meeting leading to origin of Khenkul High School at Khenkul village at Nabagram block in Murshidabad district. The first such meeting was held on 26 February, 1951 at the Kiriteshwari union board office at Milky village. The school, initially organized as non-government educational institute, was housed in a clay cottage that was replaced later on by concrete building. Unlike many other schools built by kings and queens, Khenkul High School was built with donations from common people who contributed lands, money and hard work liberally to the school. As the government shouldered financial liability of the school, the following years witnessed funds flow and the current infrastructure came up over the years. Yet the school needs a good road, more toilets, a boundary wall of the playground, cycle sheds for students, teachers and other staff. Sarbashikha Mission programmes helped a lot to reduce the age-old problem of dropout. The school now imparts Santhali language education to tribal students of the locality. NCC wing of the school merits appreciation because many of the cadets from Khenkul High School earned laurels by ranking first, second etc at the national level in the previous years. Now better days have appeared for the students because the government grants in the form of Kanyashree, SC/ST/OBC scholarships are put in place helping students to deal with financial hardship. Sarbashiksha funds and development grants from the state government are also available for upgrading the school’s infrastructure.Every year August , 31 is celebrated as the founding day of the school.
