Our School Histroy

The establishment of Bibhishanpur High School as an educational institution in 1881 as an M.V. School had a long trial of history. Following the battle of Plassey a series of epoch making events took place that led to gradual transformation in the political, economic and socio-cultural life of the people of Bengal as well as of India. The benevolent reforms of Lord William Bentink, socio-cultural reforms launched by Rammohan, Vidyasagar, ‘Young Bengal’ movement under the guiding spirit of Henry Derozio and above all the advent of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda ushered a new era in the history of Bengal which is popularly called the ‘The Renaissance’. Gradual demand for introduction of Western education was one of the salient features of the period of renaissance in Bengal. Such demand began to be materialised rapidly after the great rebel of 1857 which marked the end of Company rule and brought India under direct administration of the British Government in England. In such a critical period the inhabitants of Bibhishanpur and those of the adjacent villages felt an urge of setting up the holy institution named Bibhishanpur High School.

Late Biswanath Maity, the grandfather of Late Abha Maity, the Ex-Minister of Govt. Of West Bengal inspired Late Gadadhar Jana of Bibhishanpur to open a Middle Vernacular (M.V.) school. Later Late Gadadhar Jana and Late Akshaya Narayan Jana established this school after collecting a piece of land from Sri Bijoy Chand Mehatab, K.C.S.I., K.C.I. The benevolent king made a record of a land of 23 decimal in the name of the school from the Burdwan Royal Estate. From then on the Burdwan Royal Estate began to give a grant of Rs. 5 per annum to the school. In 1910, as per Government order the school was renamed as Bibhishanpur M.E. School. Then it was granted permanently and began to get a grant of Rs. 20 per month from Midnapore District Board Office. Along with almost all the schools of Contai Sub-division, the students of this school took a leading role in the freedom movement of India. The British Govt. became hostile and refused the grant. The development of the school became uncertain. Later in 1946, the school was temporarily granted again.

Late Basanta Kumar Manna was the Headmaster of Bibhishanpur Junior High School with two classes from 1944 to 1962. In 1963 the school was uplifted to the status of High School with the help of the local well wishers like Late Aswini Kumar Jana, Late Phanibhusan Jana(Ex-Secretary), Late Nishikanta Mandal, Prabodh Chandra Basu, Dhirendra nath Das and others. Late Satchidananda Pathak became the Headmaster in 1963 and class VII and VIII were introduced. In 1964 he started class IX and the first batch was sent for School Final Examination in 1966. Not only that, Sri Pathak uplifted the School to the status of Higher Secondary with his continuous effort through it was withdrawn later as per Govt. Order and the school became again as a ten class School. S.N. Pathak retired in 1980 and the AHM Late Prafulla Kumar Bhattacharya was appointed as officiating Headmaster. The assistant teacher Dhindra Nath Das became the officiating Headmaster when Mr. Bhattacharya joined another school at Kharagpur in 1985. The number of teachers was decreasing one by one and it was then only nine or ten.

The School was burdened with a number of court cases and all types of development came to a standstill. Fortunately, the teachers and the non-teaching employees were united and they were able to maintain the quality of teaching-learning process while trying to free the school from the cases. The Departmental authority appointed an administrator who, unfortunately, did not co-operate in the development of the school. The locality became annoyed and they started movement and fasting till death in protest against removing the administrator. The authority promised formation of Managing Committee and the new M.C. assumed charge on 3rd February 1993. The new M.C. began working by appointing the Headmaster Sri Prafulla Kumar Nayak and a number of assistant teachers and non-teaching employees. At the same time they tried to solve the problem of building also. In 2002, the school was sanctioned Higher Secondary course with Science and Arts Stream. Then in 2006 it was sanctioned Vocational Stream Course. In the long run the school acquired reputation by maintaining academic quality and social service. Sri Swapan Kumar Mandal, the A.H.M. of this school became the Teacher-in-Charge after the retirement of Mr. Prafulla Kumar Nayak in 2010. Later Mr. Swapan Kumar Mandal who eventually was the student of this institution became the Headmaster since 2011 and Mr. Mandal is continuing his service as the head of the institution with his all efforts.
